José dismisses Isla at the Partido Popular Democrático rally because he believes her family is pro-statehood. Why does he think that? Why does the PPD oppose the possibility of Puerto Rico becoming a U.S. state?

In the book, it becomes apparent that Isla's family is from the more whiter and privileged side of Puerto Rico. For her family to support statehood would mean they were more American and would blend into the fabric of America. In Jose's case, he is from the blacker, poorer side of the island. His fear would be that statehood would wipe out everything about his identity on the island.

I think José believes Isla’s family is pro-statehood because they are more upper class or rich, and in political positions. The family acts as though they would benefit more from statehood. José and the PPD are more on the working class and poor part of society, and they would not only lose their identity (from Puerto Rican to American), but they don’t seem like they’d get any new benefits either.
