7. Why does Ms. Picotto keep asking, “What exactly did I say?”

Throughout the story, Ms. Picotto often asks Lina “What exactly did I say?”

What do you think is the purpose of her question? How does it influence Lina as a character?

People often misinterpret others because we filter their words through our own assumptions. Several times, when Lina was asked, “What exactly did I say?”, she realized she had understood Ms. Picotto’s words based on her own interpretation, not what Ms. Picotto truly meant.

I thought about this a lot during the reading as I think she was trying to get Lina to listen generously and pay attention to the details. This is something i struggle with as well. While I wish her delivery was little kinder she was teaching Lina an important skill!
