9. When is it ethical to kill invasive species, if ever?

What does the science of animal intelligence mean for how we understand and live with the wild creatures around us?

Animals considered non-native or invasive are sometimes killed in order to help native species. What do you think about this? Are there times when you feel it’s justifiable? Or that it’s not?

As a biologist who studied invasive species in university, the killing of invasive species, while emotionally difficult, is sometimes the best way to protect an ecosystem and the other organisms that naturally inhabit it. As most species become invasive due to human activity, it is our responsibility to correct our actions that directly harm the environment and endemic ecosystems. Unfortunately, sometimes the invasion is so widespread that relocation simply isn't enough to remediate the area.
