What makes someone a cuentista throughout the story? How do stories gain power even when they aren’t strictly true?

Re: 3. What makes someone a cuentista throughout the story?
In the story, a cuentista is someone who carries and passes down powerful stories—often through memory, emotion, and even visions after death. Stories gain power because they hold emotional truth, shape how people see the world, and influence future generations, even if they aren’t completely factual. What matters most is their meaning and impact, not just the facts.

The visual, physical, and emotional power of the cuentista was so captivating in this story. I listened to the audiobook, so the description played out in my mind in an internal image.

I think the cuentistas are the family members that are more likely to have a good relationship with a good portion of the family. Members who would be listened to, and pass on knowledge and stories. The stories gain power my personal belief and by sharing them. Even if it’s not completely factual, if the storyteller believes it strongly enough, it’s true to them.

Re: 3. What makes someone a cuentista throughout the story?
Storytellers (cuentistas) hold unique power within families and communities. In modern times, stories within books and films also have a lot of influence in society. Stories can bless or harm, depending on the character and intent of the storyteller. This book shows how stories can also change through time or be twisted to reshape real events.
Story evolution happens innocently enough just by trying to add drama or relate the story to current situations. Sometimes stories are slanted by the personalities and interests of the teller too. I don't think these types of changes or exaggerations are necessarily bad, but when truths are distorted to deflect responsibility or project negative actions onto other individuals or groups, the harm can be very difficult to overcome.
