What do quenepas represent for José? How does sharing the fruit with Isla mark a change in their relationship?

The quenepas takes Jose back to a time of hunger and scarcity through his family’s poverty. Isla receives Jose’s vulnerability and his trust in her. As she searches for what’s real in her life Jose becomes a grounding for her experiences.

Quenepas represent poverty for José. Sharing them, and telling Isla about how sometimes that was the only food he had, gave her the ability to be more open and vulnerable with José herself. It let them get closer.
