The Sanchezes are very proud of their Spanish heritage. Why do Alma and Tío Ramón emphasize this aspect of their lineage? How does that focus on the past contrast with the environment around them?

Alma and Tio Ramón focus on the Spanish heritage because it seems to put them in higher standings with the government and businesses. The more white - the more sophisticated, as emphasized when one family member was scolding another about getting too dark and looking like a lower class worker.

It puts them as slight outliers on the island - they’re seen as different by the “blacker” inhabitants.

I think they long for a time that has passed. For them, focusing on their lost high-born heritage gives their current situation more meaning. They can't let go of their illusions and won't admit that their old way of life is no longer "meaningful" to the world. Classism and slavery must be left behind.

I'm reminded of the theme in the novel Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell--how the Old South is "a civilization gone with the wind."
